Douglas Shop re-opens after refurbishment

Bucks Road Shop front
The Douglas Hospice Shop hosted a re-opening on Thursday 20th October 2005, after Tooms Bros. Ltd., had successfully completed a major extension
The main features of the project include:
Re-roofing of the building.
Office facilities on the second floor.
Conversion of the two rooms on the first floor into a large through room to facilitate clothes for men's and children's wear, together with accessories, bedding, curtains.
Refurbishment of the former kitchen to provide a volunteer cloak room.
Extension of the ground floor show room to incorporate a large display area for clothes, changing cubicles, enclosed kitchen and book shelved area.
The shop itself is now considered a first class flag ship for Share the Care Limited, the trading arm of Hospice Care.
The premises were purchased for the Charity through the generosity of the Scholl Foundation in 1994, replacing the original Hospice shop further along Bucks Road.
The late William Scholl CBE., Chairman of Share the Care, performed the first opening ceremony in November 2000. The re-opening was conducted by Her Worship, the Mayor of Douglas, Councillor Glenda Corkish, in the company of the Mayoress, Mrs. M. Denning, and in the presence of Hospice Governors. Also in attendance were Directors of Share the Care, members of Staff, numerous Volunteers, the Architect, Gordon Clarke and John Corteen and others from Tooms Bros., surrounded by numerous shoppers all ready for the off.

The Mayor formally opens the Douglas Hospice Shop |
The Douglas shop, under the Volunteer Management of Florence Glover, raises in the region of £90,000 per annum and the Directors are hopeful that with the much enlarged floor space this sum will be increased to £150,000 per annum over the next few years.
The overall control of the day to day shop and warehouse management is in the very capable hands of Julie Jones , enthusiastically supported on a part time basis by Siobhan Ellison , Christine Kay and Julie Maclean in the office.
None of which would be successful without the tireless support of the dedicated band of Volunteers, some of who have been with the shop from the beginning. All appreciate that their daily effort helps to raise funds for Hospice Care and in turn the care of the patients and their families.
Right from the first moment after the opening
the
Bucks Road shop was packed and very busy
