Freda Dennis
Castletown Shop Manager
Congratulations and thanks to Manager Ann Clague (who stepped down in January 2009) and her Team of Volunteers for all their hard work and professionalism. And another very big thank you to all our customers, and those who give us the goods to sell.
Castletown's Hospice Shop - 9 Arbory Street - in the heart of the Town's shopping area is within sight of Castle Rushen arguably the world's best maintained medieval castle.
Castletown is the ancient Capital of the Isle of Man, built around, and in the protection of Castle Rushen which dates from the 1200s and the Viking era. Until the last half of the 1800s, Castletown was the home of Government - the House of Keys - located under the shadow of the Castle. Castletown has a population of approximately 3,100 housed in some 1,300 dwellings. The daytime population swells considerably as many businesses have located within the Town boundaries.

last day as Manager of Castletown Hospice Shop
Sadly, Saturday 31st January 2009, was Anne Clague's last day as Castletown Shop Manager. She had been Manager for nine years, during which time the Shop's takings totaled over £400,000, all going towards patient care costs. Her example was always one of very hard work and dedication to ensuring continuing success of the business and was often seen behind the counter serving customers.
Share the Care Shops Director John Dennis's wife Freda, who has been a volunteer for many years, takes over as caretaker Manager.
Castletown Hospice Shop first opened 5th December, 1989. Originally it was leased then later, through the generosity of the Scholl Foundation, the Charity was able to purchase the property. The late William Scholl CBE was Chairman of Share the Care Ltd, the Hospice trading company, until his death in 2002 and he always took a keen interest in the success of the shops.
In 2002 Hospice Shops Management decided it was time for an expansion and a complete make-over and later that year work started, removing old walls at the back, covering in a courtyard at the back and giving covered access to the old barn which had been used for receiving, sorting, and preparing given goods for sale. The newly finished interior almost doubles the shop floor area and totally transforming the premises. Once again Hospice has reason to be grateful to the Scholl Foundation having assisted with the expenditure of this new extension.
