Shop Volunteers

Volunteer Support symbolizes caring and sharing by the community in a variety of ways. It may be in a very simple form or providing more qualified skills within Hospice. Since Isle of Man Hospice opened in 1988, volunteers have risen to a wide variety of challenges and in this context, manning our six Hospice Shops and Salerooms.

The first face you will see in a Hospice shop is a friendly and helpful volunteer. Their job is to help you if required; answering your questions, guidance around the shop and at the till at the end of your visit. You do not have to have an office or shops background to volunteer here - just a willing heart. You will be helping to generate a large amount of money to pay for in-patient care and in the community. To give you an idea just how much, in the last two years Hospice Shops and Salerooms have contributed an average of over £400,000 per year.

The Hospice Shops Volunteer Service is run by Julie Jones - Shops Manager - from her office above the Bucks Road shop in Douglas, with assistance, when needed, from Hospice Care's Volunteer Service Organizers. We now have over 200 volunteers working in our six Hospice shops. They give up their time on a regular basis to be a vital part in the smooth running of our shops, open six days a week. Without their kindness and goodwill we could not function; to give of your time is as much of a donation as a cheque, economically and practically speaking, we rely very much on our volunteers and are very grateful to them all.

In 2003 Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II
Honoured Hospice Volunteers

In September 2002 Hospice were made aware of a newly-created award launched to commemorate Her Majesty's Golden Jubilee, which "...recognizes the vital role played by hundreds of thousands of 'unsung heroes' of the community and voluntary world and emphasizes the importance of continuing recognition of their work." Hospice Isle of Man Volunteers were chosen to be among the very first to receive this award covering the United Kingdom, Channel Islands and the Isle of Man. The ceremony, together with photographs, is recorded on a separate page.
