John Cowan

John was born in 1944, educated in Birkenhead, moving to the Island with his wife, Jan, and children, Nikki and Andrew, in 1984. After a forty-four year career in banking, John retired for the second (and final) time from the world of finance in 2004.

Several years before retirement, he had re-kindled his long held interest in photography and, with son Andrew, decided to join the Isle of Man Photographic Society. Since then, John has been a Committee Member, Treasurer, and President. Having finished his last term of office, John's commitment to the Society remains just as strong as an ordinary member and as the Webmaster. (John designed, built and maintains the Isle of Man Photographic Society website)

John undertook a number of photographic assignments before retirement, and having built on this base, he is now a well-known local freelance photographer, happy to consider any photographic work that clients, new and old, may request.

Of all the photographic work that he does, John finds that his voluntary work for Hospice is the most rewarding. His association came about when his late Mother, Phyllis, was terminally ill. During the last weeks of her life, she gained a great deal of pleasure from visiting St. Bridget's Day Centre. When she was too ill to travel to St. Bridget's, Hospice MacMillan nurses, and Hospice at Home nurses, brought their superb level of care to her bedside, enabled her to remain at home with John and her family and to die peacefully, with dignity, with all her loved ones around her. For this, John and the family will always be grateful and John's photographic work is his way of saying a continuous “thank you” to all concerned.
